Meet the artist - RYO UCHIYAMA

MADE IN NIHON is proud to introduce the stunning artwork of Japanese calligrapher Ryo Uchiyama. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with him and discuss the inspiration behind his creations. Join us in this conversation to explore the passion and insights that fuel Ryo Uchiyama’s art.

About RYO UCHIYAMA

Ryo Uchiyama began learning calligraphy at the age of 7, and by 10, he had already won the Prefectural Governor’s Award in his hometown of Fukuoka, showcasing his exceptional talent. Over the years, he has received numerous prestigious awards and been featured in major media outlets such as Asahi Shinbun, Yomiuri Shinbun, and Nishinippon Shinbun. Uchiyama also achieved the grand prize at national high school and university calligraphy competitions for three consecutive years, starting in his first year of high school.

In his second year of high school, he won the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award at the 48th Calligraphy Exhibition sponsored by Daito Bunka University. Today, Uchiyama works as a calligraphy artist, creating designs for Hollywood movie titles, fashion brands, and a wide variety of other projects.

Could you tell us what inspired you to become an artist and shape the Ryo Uchiyama we know today?

I initially started practicing calligraphy at my mother’s suggestion. I had been learning it for many years, but during elementary and high school, I became inspired by Michael Jackson and street dancing, and decided to pursue dance. At first, I danced because I wanted to make a living as a dancer, but as I encountered many talented dancers, I realized it wasn't working out as I had hoped. During this struggle, I realized there was no such thing as a "calligrapher and dancer"—I saw an opportunity to become a unique artist. Both calligraphy and dance share the essence of "expression." I aim to continue as an artist who can inspire others through what I love.

How did you transition from writing characters to creating art through calligraphy? Where do you find your inspiration?

I decided to explore art because I wanted to create works that would resonate deeply with people. There are emotions inside me that I can’t fully express with words or letters, and I believe I can communicate these feelings through my art.

Could you tell us about the "Samurai in Armor" series that we carry at MADE IN NIHON?

The samurai series I create, and the samurai themselves, symbolize "love and peace." I hope to foster a world where everyone—myself included—can reach out to others, cooperate for a more peaceful future, and live strong, courageous lives, fighting not only for themselves but also for others.

Are there any projects or themes you would like to explore in the future?

I would love to hold solo exhibitions and performances overseas to share my work with a broader audience. I want more people to experience my expressions firsthand.

Thank you for sharing your insights. Finally, do you have a message for those considering purchasing your work or those who have already purchased it?

My name is Ryo Uchiyama. Thank you so much for supporting my work. I hope everyone who owns my art continues to feel proud of their purchase and can say, "I'm so glad I bought Ryo Uchiyama’s work." Please keep an eye on me as I strive to grow both as an artist and as a person. Thank you.
